On March 3, 1985, traders in the Summertown area of Oxfordshire voiced their displeasure with a city council parking scheme adopted the previous Friday. The 18-month experiment, which made parking official permanent, has reduced the number of car spaces outside their stores and made it harder for customers to park. Traders in the area had previously given up the area in front of shops for parking, and now this has been taken away. The scheme, which includes kerbing and bollards, is expected to be installed at the end of the month. On March 3, 1985, traders in the Summertown area of Oxfordshire voiced their displeasure with a city council parking scheme adopted the previous Friday. Pice $361 VW 7- SUMMERTOWN traders claim a city council parking scheme adopted outside on Banbury their stores Road is losing valuable Traders’ rap for latest parking move customers. They say the 18-month layby and parking experiment made officially permanent last has reduced the Friday number of car spaces and is making it harder for customers to park. 4 coll Mr Nick Woods, manager Oddbins wine merchants, said: “From our point of view it is a very ad thing because it cuts down arking by at least half. She said she would like to see a return to the echelon-style of slant- ed car spaces as they provided more room for parking. File: EX. SUMMER “I think the council could have done better for the traders in the area,” she said. “They had a very good scheme worked out with the traders that retained half of the echelon parking, but they suddenly decided not to carry out that ex- periment.” Better “One of the attractions of Sum- nertown was being able to park. I hink all traders are suffering quite a lot. I have spoken to customers who are shopping elsewhere be- cause of parking problems.” He went on: “It’s quite a serious problem, particularly since the traders gave up the area in front of shops for parking and now it has been taken away.” Mrs Betty Adby, a co-owner of Risings toy and wool shop, said the scheme had lost her a considerable amount of trade. Mrs Queenie Whorley, mana- geress of Martin’s newsagents, said: “It’s not an ideal scheme for all traders but on the whole it has generally now been accepted as the best option after the original echelon scheme.” But she felt the adopted scheme had meant a great reduction in the number of parking spaces. City highways and traffic com- mittee chairman, Mr Alan Pope, said there had been no objections to the scheme before its adoption. He believed the scheme was now accepted as much better than the old echelon parking. Permanent kerbing and bollards, costing about 14,000, are to be installed at the end of this month.
